Dene Language

Dene language refers to the Indigenous language spoken by the Dene people. The Dene are a First Nations group whose traditional territory extends across parts of Canada's Northwest Territories, Yukon, British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan.

In Fort Nelson specifically, the Dene language may be spoken by members of the local Dene community, who have historically inhabited the region. However, like many Indigenous languages, the Dene language faces challenges such as declining numbers of fluent speakers and the need for revitalization efforts to ensure its preservation and continued use.

We acknowledge that we are on Treaty 8 Territory, a traditional meeting grounds, gathering place, and traveling route to the Cree, Dene, and Dane-zaa (Beaver), and Metis. We acknowledge all the many First Nations, Metis, and Inuit whose footsteps have marked these lands for centuries.
