English as a Second Language

Our English as a Second Language program offers both individual and group tutor sessions for improving the English of learners for whom English is an additional language.

We also focus on developing the students' ability to settle into life in Canada by hosting group social outings where learners can practice communicating in English in common, everyday situations.

Learners also have a chance to attend events in our community with a tutor present to explain the event's significance.

One-to-one Tutoring

Trained tutors work individually with English learners in areas where they would like to improve their English skills.

Areas of focus may be a combination of:
*  Spoken English
*  Reading English
*  Writing in English
*  Specific English requirements - e.g. English to complete driving test

Group Special Events

We encourage our English learners to get involved in community events and programs, which could be of benefit to their families and themselves.
One way we encourage this is to organize group outings with tutors to events happening in our community. The students spend time with their tutor before attending, learning about the event, why it is happening and what it means to the history of the area or the community at present. Learners then meet at the event and have tutor(s) there to take them around, answer questions and explain things to them.

Community events that our group has recently attended include:
* 2010 Adult Learners' Showcase
* Barbara Adler Poetry events
* Cowboy Storyteller
* Flower Springs Hike
* Olympic Torch Relay
*  Relay for Life

The goals of the ESL (English as a Second Language) Program
focus primarily on the adult family members. The goals of this
program are:
• to provide English language instruction;
• to help adults gain motivational skills and knowledge to pursue further education and training; and,
• to enhance the parenting skills of adult participants.
Adult learners can improve their English language skills through an integrated literacy curriculum and the use of ‘real-life materials.'
